Chapter 162 The Father of Submarines (2)

Huolan, Huang Yixiang and other shipyard staff saw Chen Hao, the Minister of Finance, with a gentle expression and no airs. Although he was in a high position at a young age, he did not look arrogant when he was in power, and he felt good about Chen Haodun.

After entering the reception hall of the shipyard, Wang Songjie first said to Holland: "Mr. Holland, Minister Chen has great expectations for your submarine. This shipyard was also built by Minister Chen. Do you have any other requirements? Now, just ask Minister Chen."

"God! This is simply heaven! What else can I ask for? I really hope that Mr. Minister will send someone to bring me here from the United States soon." Holland said sincerely.

After a pause, Holland asked anxiously: "Mr. Minister, do you really agree with the cancellation of all the artillery fire configurations on the submarine?"

"Of course I agree!" Chen Hao said solemnly: "Mr. Holland, I know very well the blame you have suffered in the United States. The U.S. Navy is too short-sighted and just build more battleships such as battleships and cruisers. Why do you have to install small submarines with cannons for surface combat? Isn't this the big deal about the world?"

"Yes! The U.S. Admiralty is watching the sky from a well. According to their requirements, even if they try their best, it is impossible to create a satisfactory submarine." Huang Yixiang continued with a bright look.

Old Holland was excited to get Chen Hao's support and assured Chen Hao: "Mr. Minister, with your support and the excellent conditions of the shipyard, I believe that the most advanced submarines in the world will be launched soon."

Chen Hao nodded and said carefully: "Mr. Holland, the technological development of countries around the world is changing with each passing day, and the development of submarines has also made great progress. There is an old saying in China that "Shit is shorter and inch is stronger. Although the "Holland-6" submarine you developed 10 years ago is still very advanced, I think you should also pay attention to the advanced submarines made by other countries and use some of their more reasonable designs."

Although some words that are not meaningful when speaking Chinese sayings in English are good, Chen Hao's English speaking skills are good and he speaks slowly, so Holland can roughly understand what Chen Hao means.

Holland smiled and was about to answer, but Huang Yixiang interjected: "Minister Chen, as far as I know, the submarine "Navir" designed by French scientist Laubev is also very advanced and unique.

The 'Navier' also packs a shell outside the inner shell, which makes the submarine have a shell that looks like a torpedo boat and an inner shell designed according to the requirements of the submarine. The crew and all equipment are installed in the pressure-resistant inner shell.

The space between the inner and outer shells of the submarine "Navier" is filled as a ballast water cabinet, which controls the submarine's diving and floating.

When the submarine removes the water from the ballast water cabinet, it can be as good as a torpedo boat, making its surface navigation extremely fast, reaching 11 nautical miles per hour. However, the endurance of "Navier" is half less than that of Mr. Holland's submarine, only 500 nautical miles."

At the same time, when the ballast water cabinet is filled with water, the underwater short-range speed of "Navier" is as high as 8 nautical miles per hour. Even if it sails underwater for several hours, its underwater speed can reach 5 nautical miles per hour, which is much faster than other contemporary submarines."

Hearing this, Lin Juemin asked with interest: "Engineer Huang, have you ever seen the 'Navier' submarine in Europe?"

Huang Yixiang replied: "When I was in a shipyard in the UK, I saw such submarine performances and visited them. I think the design concept of the double-layer structure of the submarine is the most advanced technology today. Moreover, the submarine uses a diesel engine that is stronger than a gasoline engine as a source of power, which greatly increases the speed of the submarine, which is also worth learning."

After Huang Yixiang finished speaking, everyone couldn't help but look at Holland. Everyone wanted to know whether this submarine master knew that other advanced submarines appeared, and whether he would listen to other people's opinions, learn from others' strengths and weaknesses, so that his submarine development career could go further.

Holland said, "Sir, although I have been discouraged in recent years and have been drinking all day long, this does not mean that I don't care about the development of submarines. I highly appreciate the French submarine "Navier" submarine, and, in the United States, a talented submarine inventor named Simon Lake has long appeared in the United States. The submarine he designed is also worth learning from."

Then, Horan introduced Simon Lake and the submarine he designed and built.

In the 1890s, Simon Lake was influenced by the science fiction novel "Twenty Thousand Miles Under the Sea" by the famous French science writer Jules Verne, and he was single-handedly involved in the research of submarines.

Lake borrowed a sum of money from his relatives, and after hard work, he built his first submarine, the "Little Yagur Dad" in 1893.

However, Lake initially built a submarine not for military purposes, but was completely attracted by the charming underwater creatures. From the beginning of building the "Little Yagur Dad", he wanted to get out of the submarine to collect underwater creatures.

So, he installed air compression equipment in the submarine and set up an air locker.

Lake makes the air pressure generated by the compressed air equipment equal to the seawater pressure outside the boat. In this way, opening the door of the air gate cabin, people can walk out of the boat in submersible, but sea water will not flow into the gate cabin. People call this gate door that prevents sea water from flowing into the boat and freely enters and exits from the hatch of the boat called a valve or water door.

With the help of the valve, Lake and his partners, gathered a large number of marine life on the charming New York Bay bottom, and spent many pleasant times.

Afterwards, Lake began to continuously modify the "Little Yagur Dad" and completed it in 1897.

The modified submarine is named "Yagur". Whether sailing on water or underwater, it is driven forward by a 22-kilowatt gasoline engine.

Since the gasoline engine requires air when working, Lake installed a suction pipe and a smoke exhaust pipe that extends out of the water surface on the boat, and used a ballast water tank to drive the submarine's ups and downs.

In order to improve the seaworthiness of the submarine, Lake also outsourced a shell to the suction pipe and smoke exhaust pipe. The modified "Yagul" submarine is relatively stable in floating and submersible, and can extend the snorkel used for the internal combustion engine to work underwater at an appropriate depth, thereby extending the submarine's underwater retention time.

In 1898, the submarine "Agur" sailed from Norfolk to New York with its own power alone, becoming the first submarine to sail on the high seas.

The biggest feature of Lake submarine is that crews can enter and exit the submarine freely underwater, so they can send people to conduct underwater combat, mine sweeping and mine-breaking.

Lake's second submarine, the Protector, was also launched in 1901. He wanted to dedicate the submarine to his motherland for combating the enemy.

But the U.S. Admiralty rejected Lake's kindness, so Lake had to go abroad to seek his own position, and the talent of another submarine inventor was buried.

After hearing this, everyone sighed. Chen Hao couldn't help but sigh. It seemed that his little history knowledge had some omissions, and he didn't know that there was a genius submarine inventor like Simon Lake.

"Since Mr. Holland is willing to learn from the strengths of other submarines, our submarine development work will make more rapid progress." Wang Songjie said happily.

Holland, Huang Yixiang and others discussed how to improve the performance of submarines. Chen Hao thought about it for a while, waved his hand to calm everyone down, and said: "Everyone, I am going to set up a submarine research center, with Mr. Holland as the director of the research center and Huang Yixiang as the deputy director.

Once the funds, personnel and equipment required by the Submarine Research Center are proposed by Mr. Holland, all departments shall not delay and slack off, and violators shall be dealt with as malfeasance. In addition, once the research results of the Submarine Research Center are adopted by the military, the leaders of the research results will receive a certain proportion of dividends."

Holland said with emotion: "Mr. Minister, it is my lifelong wish to develop a submarine. Therefore, you don't have to take such encouragement measures. I will do my best to create the most advanced and practical submarines for you."
